QUINTESSENTIAL! is an ensemble of 5 graduate students – soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone, and pianist – whose assistantship comprises the opportunity of practicing, rehearsing, and performing on and off campus, both in the community and the surrounding region. Performance venues will include the Broyhill Music Center on the campus of Appalachian State University and the newly constructed Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock. Weekly vocal and dramatic coaching will be included in the program of study, as well as a concentration on languages and professional career development. Upon completion of the first year of study, Quintessential! members will have the opportunity to attend the Franz Schubert Institut in Baden bei Wien, Austria for a 5-week summer course on the Poetry and Performance of the German Lied.
Qualifications: Bachelor of Music degree; evidence of exceptional performance ability; and admission to the Cratis Williams Graduate School at Appalachian State University, as well as the Hayes School of Music.

Audition Requirements:
The audition shall include 5 to 6 selections consisting of the following:
1. Eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century art songs performed in the original language,
2. A twentieth century work for voice and piano,
3. An operatic aria in the original key and language,
4. An oratorio aria in the original key and language.
The student shall demonstrate vocal techniques, musicianship, and artistry with the potential for a performing career. Proficiency in the diction of French, German, Italian, and English shall be demonstrated in the literature performed during the auditions. The audition will also include tonal memory and sight-reading, both melodic and rhythmic.

Repertoire requirement for audio CD or DVD: 2 art songs and 1 aria, representing 3 languages.
Auditions are scheduled by appointment. If invited to audition in person based on your materials, you must intend to major in Vocal Performance and be accepted into the Cratis Williams Graduate School.

The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University is comprised of 485 music majors, 45 full time faculty, 24 part time faculty, and 21 graduate assistants.
