Biography: Dr. Joseph Amaya currently serves on the voice faculty at the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University.  At Appalachian since 1989, he has taught voice and has helped spur the growth of the popular opera workshop.  Dr. Amaya has also had numerous guest solo appearances with several of the ensembles, such as the Appalachian Chorale, University Singers, Men's Glee Club, and Wind Ensemble. Dr. Amaya has also served at the University of Texas at Arlington, Trinity University, and the University of Georgia.  While at the University of Georgia, he helped to establish the opera workshop program, and appeared as a guest lecturer and artist at other colleges in the region. He received his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from State University of New York, studying under Charles Robert Reinert.  At Florida State University, he obtained his Master of Music in Voice and Doctor of Music in Voice having studied under the critically acclaimed Elena Nikolaidi. 

While under professional management in New York City, Dr. Amaya appeared as a guest artist with professional opera companies and toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.  He has appeared in major roles opposite such renowned artists as Anna Moffo, Rosalind Elias, and Ashley Putnam, and under conductors Richard Woitach and Anton Coppola.  He also studied extensively with Beverly Johnson of the Julliard School.
