Appalachian State University Community Music School provides non-credit music instruction for children and adults in our local community as well as surrounding Western NC counties. We are uniquely able to combine university expertise with area teaching artists to provide outstanding musical training. Come and celebrate musical excellence with us!
Middle Eastern Drumming: Tuesdays: 5:30-6:30 PM, Rm 225
For children/adults ages 12 years and above; learn to play rhythms from Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Romania, and others on the doumbec, the most ancient of skinned drums dating to 4000 B.C.E. Beginner and intermediate levels welcome. Tuition: $145.00 per semester plus purchase of a drum*
*Drums may be purchased through instructor for $75.
Beginning African Drumming: Wednesdays: 5:30-6:30 PM, Rm 225
Children/adults ages 9 years and older – a great opportunity for children and parents to participate together! For those who have never drummed or had any prior musical experience, this course will explore drum sound capabilities through speech, movement, and play utilizing traditional rhythms and songs from Africa. Drums provided – no purchase necessary.
Tuition: $145.00 per semester
Intermediate African Drumming: Thursdays: 5:30-7:30, Rm 225
For those who have taken Beginning African Drumming or have prior percussion experience, Intermediate African Drumming focuses specifically on instruments from Guinea and Mali, primarily the djembe and djun-djun. A review of specific sounds will be followed by an intense study of traditional rhythms from Senegal, Burkino Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Ghana. Purchase of djembe required. Tuition: $200.00 per semester plus purchase of a drum.

Learn the ins and outs of Finale notation software in an interactive environment with hands on experience. Projects will be oriented to the educator, songwriter, composer, and music student wishing to learn more about notation software and creating lead sheets, scores, and parts for a variety of musical applications. Class size is limited. No experience necessary. This course will be taught on Monday evenings by Scott Wynne, Chief Recording Engineer for the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio. Individual instruction in Suzuki violin, and cello will be available. Suzuki is a unique method of string instruction for children ages 4 years and older where they learn by listening, imitating, and watching others. Parents attend all individual and group classes with their child in order to help guide daily practice. Suzuki instruction includes 15 individual lessons per semester as well as 4 group lessons.
Individual piano, studio percussion, Suzuki and traditional guitar instruction will also be available as well as traditional violin, viola and cello.
Teaching artists include ASU students and faculty as well as community musicians. Fees vary according to teaching artist’s training and experience.

Once a lesson time has been established, return the registration form included in this brochure with the registration fee or register on-line. Your lesson time will be confirmed upon receipt of your tuition fee. Students may enroll in individual lessons at any time during
the semester on a pro-rated tuition fee. If there are no openings, students will be placed on a waiting list.
To Register for drumming classes and notation software class: Complete and mail or fax registration form (pdf), or click here to register on-line. Registration for group classes closes on the first day of the class.
Minimum enrollment: Minimum enrollment is required for all group classes. If any class is cancelled due to low enrollment students will have the option of transferring to another class, enrolling in individual lessons or receiving a full tuition refund.
Students who arrive late for lessons/classes cannot be guaranteed full lesson times. Notification by the student/parent of inability to attend a class/lesson is requested as a courtesy to the teaching artist, but does not exempt the obligation for tuition for that class/lesson. Teachers are not obligated to make up lessons resulting from student cancellations; however, there will be one-week of make-up lessons scheduled at the end of each semester and missed lessons may be scheduled at that time at the discretion of the teaching artist. Teaching artists will make up lessons cancelled by them.
Participants may park in any available parking space that is nor reserved or handicapped after 5:00 PM on weekdays or all day on weekends. For lessons/classes scheduled before 5:00 PM, participants may purchase parking passes that will allow them to park on campus during the lesson/class time. Please see registration form for this information.
In the event of inclement weather, the ASU-CMS may cancel classes/lessons. Look for announcements on the Hayes School of Music Homepage. In the event that classes/lessons are cancelled due to inclement weather, then those activities will be rescheduled. If the ASU-CMS is open and you cannot travel to your class/lesson, please contact your teaching artist. Do not assume that the ASU-CMS will be closed when the Watauga County Public Schools are closed.
Tuition for classes will be refunded only if the student notifies the CMS director in writing before the first class meeting. If notified, a refund less $20 administration fee will be refunded. There will be no refunds after the first meeting.
All cancellations must be approved by the director and made before the second week of classes. Refunds can not be made in the even of withdrawal, nor will charges be cancelled when a student discontinues lessons after the second meeting of the semester. In the case of cancellations, a $20 fee will be charged in addition to any fees accumulated for lessons attended.
A limited number of scholarships are available based on financial need. Proof of income required for this application process. *10% of our students are currently receiving tuition scholarships. There are no additional scholarships available at this time
