The intermediate training in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music at Appalachian State University is taught as a 6-day, 50-hour intensive in a beautiful retreat setting off-campus. Through intensive instruction and supervised practice in the Bonny Method, the Level II prepares the experienced therapist for beginning practice in the Bonny Method. Pre-requisites include completion of an AMI endorsed Level I GIM training, recommendation by the Level I Primary Trainer, 2-4 personal sessions since Level I training, and application for admission (Word doc) to the Level II.

Through lectures, demonstrations, and supervised experiences as guide and traveler, this intermediate level training will prepare participants to

  2. Differentiate guiding interventions for types of imagery [CBMT Scope of Practice III.A.5.h(1)]
  3. Track imagery across a series of sessions [CBMT Scope of Practice III.A.5.h]
  4. Use verbal and nonverbal skills to process session material [CBMT Scope of Practice III.A.5.d]

Participants also will demonstrate knowledge of

  1. GIM as a depth process [CBMT Scope of Practice III.A.2.d]
  2. Methods for analyzing music for GIM
  3. The process across a series of sessions
  4. Clinical applications and contraindications [CBMT Scope of Practice II.A.5]

Level II training requires completion of follow-up assignments, which address both professional development and personal growth. The assignments include guiding single Bonny Method session with healthy adults, completing assigned readings and music projects, and personal GIM sessions. This training may be used toward completion of requirements for becoming a Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery.

Graduate academic credit is available through Appalachian State University. Students who have never attended Appalachian must apply for admission to the Graduate School and pay a $45.00 non-refundable application fee.

In addition, this training is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 50 continuing music therapy education credits. Credits awarded by CBMT also are accepted by the National Board for Certified Counselors. The Southeastern Region of the American Music Therapy Association (Approved Provider # P-024) maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria. This workshop is designed for music therapists and other mental health professionals.
