Construction of the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio began in 1996. The 2,000 square-foot addition to the Broyhill Music Center, supported by state funds, was completed in 1999. The acoustical design and interior construction phase of the project, supported by a combination of state funds, foundation grants and private gifts, continued until the summer of 2001. Classes were first held in the studio complex during the Fall 2001 semester. The studio's audio systems were designed and installed over the fall and winter of 2001-2002. As of Summer 2002, the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio stands complete and fully operational.
