Students enrolled in the Music Industry Studies program's concentration of Music Recording and Production work on a host of projects each semester ranging from simple MIDI productions on ProTools LE lab stations to larger scale video productions which utilize sampling, film scoring, effects spotting and DVD menu production. The hands on approach to the studio atmosphere allows the students to work in a real world environment with the constraints and support of an educational system. While guidelines are given with each project, it is up to the students to design a large portion of the creative, musical, and production values that goes into each work. The result is a demo reel at the end of the four years which is not a carbon copy of everyone else's in the graduating class and that truly represents what the student is capable of in a professional capacity.
Below you will find various projects recorded and produced at the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio by students enrolled in our degree program. Some of the projects were collaborations with students from other areas and a handful of the projects are commercial projects that came to the RFG Recording Studio to be produced by students within our program.
In Fall 2006, the MUS 4427 class participated in Shure Microphone's Recording Competition. The competition between 10 University Recording Programs throughout the United States involved recording a music production using only the Shure Microphone kit provided by the company. Members of the project included Kevin Dailey, Michael Gregory, Miles Price, John Morris, Daniel Shearin, and Professor Scott Wynne. The team worked on an original song composed by member Kevin Dailey and orchestrated by John Morris titled You and The Moon and included performances by the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra conducted by Professor James Anderson. Fall 2006 saw a lot of changes within the Music Industry Studies program. A Senior level Music Industry Studies course titled "Seminar in Music Technology" brought together our Seniors in new ways to demonstrate the effectiveness technology presents through several projects, papers, and homework assignments. The courses's final project required all members to join a production team charged with the responsibility of making a video, creating a music bed, and handling audio components necessary for the designed project. Each group was given free reign as to the content but with finals, papers and projects looming ahead most teams choose a humorous approach to lighten the semester's ending.

Student productions are a large portion of the curriculum for the Music Recording and Production track of the Music Industry Studies major. At the Hayes School of Music, MIS majors have the benefit of working with the high caliber of student and faculty musicians that can be found in the hallways of this school. Each project provides the opportunity to work with music performance majors, music education majors, music therapy majors, and jazz studies certificate students who will be making up the work force of the music industry in the coming years. Not only do our students get the advantage of having these professional musicians work on their projects but all recorded students have the opportunity to use these projects as demos for their own personal use.
