Course,
Payment Schedule, & Cancellation Policy forms
The program will be an introduction to
Irish Traditional Music and its creative process as well as
the study of cultural aspects of Ireland and how it relates to the
different styles of Irish Traditional Music. Part of the program will
be in residence at the University College Cork where students will
attend daily lectures and master classes. All participants will study
the Irish whistle and take private one hour lessons on their major
instruments, voice or dance (whistle, Irish flute, uillean pipes,
bodhrán, fiddle, piano, button accordion, guitar, concertina,
Sean-Nós singing, set dancing and step dancing (old style).
The students will visit several pubs to observe and hear the variety
of styles of Irish music.Participants do not have
to be music majors. It is not necessary to read music since Irish
Traditional Music is mainly taught by ear. There will be weekend excursions
to popular geographical and historical sites. The program will spend
time in Dublin, Cork, Cobh and Blarney. Each participant will register
for four hours of credit.
There is a limited enrollment of 15 students. The Ireland Program
consists of two 2hr. courses offered during the first summer session.
Introduction to Irish Traditional Music (3530 or 5530)
and
The Creative Process in Irish Traditional Music (3531
or 5531) Honors Credit is available for these courses. The course
objectives are to introduce students to Irish Traditional Music through
hands on approach with performances and interactions with Irish musicians.
There is orientation sessions during the spring semester that will
introduce the students to the Irish whistle and the cultural aspects
of Ireland.

College Cork, Ireland
Cost of the Program is $3625. It includes air fare, lodging,
breakfast each day, private lessons, all transportation , insurance,
a whistle, Irish music sessions, visits to museums, castles and all
excursions. The program cost does not include tuition and spending/food
money.

Checks should be made out to Appalachian State University.
Students wishing to stay longer in Ireland or travel to other places
in Europe should notify the director in advance.
For information on FINANCIAL
AID
Participants do not have to be music majors
but do need to have a proficiency on an instrument, voice or dance.
It is not necessary to read music since Irish Traditional Music is
mainly taught by ear. They need to fill out an International Studies
application form. students from other institutions and ASU graduating
seniors are also welcome to apply. A valid USA passport is needed
and is sufficient to travel to Ireland.
